Compassion is a word that has many different meanings for different people . Essentially, compassion is a skill we can develop to help us understand, tolerate and regulate difficult emotions and thoughts that are a part of being human. Compassion Focused Therapy can help you to develop these skills.
We are naturally inclined to avoid the difficult parts of being us, often with undesired and unintended consequences, especially in the long term. Humans have a built in capacity to care, understand and deal with very difficult situations and we can develop this capacity to turn towards these difficult parts in a way which cares, supports and nurtures our wellbeing.
Developing compassion for ourselves can be a big challenge but fortunately there are lots of dedicated and committed people doing wonderful scientific and clinical work to understand how to develop the skills and courage we need to take on this challenge.
